We’ve done the work in studying body language to help you achieve your next best shot easily! In this business headshot session, the purpose was to get a marketing photo for real estate. As you can imagine it is a very people oriented job, so it was imperative that we nailed the open and welcoming body posture.

By simply having the subject stand with their weight on one foot, and their body slightly off centred, a direct, yet approachable demeanour is born! Cropping the image to be slightly off centred helped emphasize the friendliness by adding plenty of breathing room with slightly more background space on the left of the image.

In this case, our client had a music therapy business and had purple in her logo, so we matched the same purple to be cohesive with her brand.

We understand that corporate portraits need to be basic for practical purposes, but just because they have to be simple doesn’t mean they have to be shot on a plain white background! We’ve noticed that the portraits tend to feel nicer shot against a slightly darker background.

Our theory is that since paper is white, we tend to look more fake and cartoon-like is we shoot against it. On the contrary, a light grey background will show a tonality, thus making it appear more environmental as a result.

If you choose to shoot against a white background, the possibilities of what to wear suddenly change. In this example, we love how this dress flatters her silhouette but we want to make sure the attention is not lost from her face as the pattern is a bit busy and contrast heavy.

To counteract this, we achieved balance by shooting against a white background, giving room for the eyes to breathe. Who would have thoughts that eyes need to breathe!

It may be hard to imagine, but shot on our grey or charcoal background, this dress may not have been as effective. Sometimes all you’re really looking for is a clean slate to bounce off of !
