Professional Photography for Social Media Images:

/ / / / / material for online marketing

This is a portrait commissioned from a creative agency who was looking for marketing material for their social media and Instagram. The idea was to have personable shots of their staff as opposed to the typical corporate portrait style.

Each company member that we shot had a different hobby that we captured to bring out their character. Brazllian Jiu-Jitsu was the interest of this young lady, who we snapped this confident horizontal portrait of. The background colour was in line with the company branding, which was planned to match with their social media feed.

Professional Business and Corporate Headshots:

/ / / / / environmental background

No matter the weather, if your photoshoot takes place in the afternoon, we can arrange to have your portrait against our character window. The studio building is over 100 years old, which means it will undeniably add some visual interest to your headshot.

The viewer’s eye is able to relax looking at things other than the face in the photowhereas on a clean studio background, there’s no distractions and therefore more emphasis on the face. Not to say focusing the face is a bad thing when it comes to headshots, however from the subject’s point of view a window background could soften the portrait just to their liking.

For best results we recommend booking our Corporate/Business Package—trying an environmental background for your first option followed by a simple studio background for the second look. Compare and contrast the same outfit on two backgrounds, or change things up completely!

Professional Actor/Actress Headshots

/ / / / / to crop or not to crop

One of the most common things we’ve noticed over the years of shooting is that people tend to like things on others they don’t necessarily immediately like on themselves. An example of this is when it comes to the cropping of the photos.

We often respond well to portraits of others that have a subtly tight crop (since the impression is more impactful). Due to this, we sometimes apply the same cropping technique to our headshots, yet we found it’s common for clients to react with a “don’t cut my head off!”

We decided the best way to alleviate the issue was to provide the files with a tighter and looser crop. And ideally, with their own timing, they will slowly get used to the sight of their own faces close up!

Professional Headshots for Real Estate Agents:

/ / / / /

We often get asked if we shoot realtors specifically, and the short answer is—yes ! When it comes to realtor portraits, we follow the same lighting principles as we do for our LinkedIn headshots. We understand that as a real estate agent, you may be looking for more than 1 photo of yourself to use fo various marketing purposes whether it be online print media.

That’s why we always suggest that if you have a particular pose or concept in mind, that you pitch us the ideas beforehand so we may be best prepared to get the shots you need. We’ve had clients bring in props, signs, request full body or even have clipping service done on all of their images (as requested by their graphic designer).

Downtown Studio for Headshots and Corporate Portrait Photography:

/ / / / / the standing portrait

Some people’s approach to their portrait is very practical. The standing portrait gives you the flexibility to take it as it is, breathable with less emphasis on the face, or crop later as an option. Crop it your self or have us do it for you, either way you are bound to get some variation by choosing this style of headshot.

We don’t restrict your desire to shoot close up, full body, or half body, simply let us know what you’re interested in beforehand, or free style it on the day of depending on your mood. Whatever the case, it’s your time to explore what works for you.

Downtown Photography Studio for Linkedin Headshots:

/ / / / / vertical and horizontal portrait

Here’s a recent shoot we did whereby the client liked both vertical and horizontal portrait styles. This can be done by manually by literally making the camera shoot in both vertical and horizontal orientation, or it can be achieved by cropping in photoshop later on.

The horizontal crop uses the white space (or in this case—the grey space) to frame the subject comfortably. The effect of a horizontal portrait is contemporary and considerate, it emits a “breathable” feeling, as opposed to the heaviness from the tighter cropped vertical shot.

The vertical shot’s benefit is it is simply more impactful, and since there’s less information in the frame, your expression is more noticeable and a natural smile becomes invaluable.

Headshots for Linkedin Profile Pictures

This is a great example of the rule I often mention, but can never be heard enough as the number one tip for what to wear for Linkedin headshots: in order to have a stunning portrait, consider using a light, medium, and dark tone in your photo. Count the background as part of your wardrobe, as what clothing you wear against what background will also matter.

To break it down even simpler, for your wardrobe stick to two tones, and let the background speak as the third. So if your jacket is dark navy and your shirt is bright white, finish it off with a medium grey background!
